EVANSVILLE – Bedford North Lawrence senior Ethan Stancombe suffered a season-ending loss in the quarterfinal round of the IHSAA wrestling semistate on Saturday.
After winning his first-round match at 157 pounds, Stancombe (25-4) dropped a 10-0 decision to Brownsburg’s Mason Day in the second round. The top four in each weight class qualified for the state championships on Feb. 21. Two wins were required to advance.
In the first round, Stancombe dominated Indian Creek senior Logan Lindsey by a 17-4 major decision. Day, ranked No.6 in the state and a state qualifier last season, advanced with a 10-3 win over Evansville Mater Dei’s Gavin Winegard in the opening round.
Only three BNL wrestlers have advanced to the state finals in school history.
Stancombe, BNL’s first regional champion since 1989, completed his career with 101 wins (third on the all-time program list).
