COLUMBUS – A 46-year-old Columbus man died Tuesday morning after his vehicle drove into a pond near the intersection of North Indianapolis Road and Kenholt Drive.
The Columbus Police Department and other first responders were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a car in the pond. Upon arrival, officers found several bystanders in the water attempting to rescue the driver. Officers also tried to reach the driver but were unsuccessful.
The Bartholomew County Water Rescue Team and the Columbus Fire Department arrived and deployed rescue boats and divers. The driver, identified as Christopher Pool, the vehicle’s sole occupant, was recovered from the pond. Despite life-saving attempts by medical personnel, Pool was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary reports indicate that Pool was driving southbound on Indianapolis Road when, for an unknown reason, his vehicle veered off the road, went through nearby bushes, and entered the pond.
CPD detectives are working with the Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office to investigate the circumstances surrounding Pool’s death.
Several individuals sustained minor injuries while attempting to rescue Pool. All were treated and released at the scene.
