LAWRENCE CO. – The body of Firefighter Leroy Terrell was returned to Lawrence County on Monday afternoon, escorted by police officers and fellow firefighters. Terrell, a Bedford resident, was tragically killed in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning in Monroe County.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident scene at State Road 446 and Dutch Ridge Road intersection at approximately 6:20 a.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2025. Deputies found Terrell’s 2006 Ford F350 off the road and in the woods. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Monroe County Coroner’s Office. Preliminary investigations suggest that slick road conditions contributed to the accident.
Fellow firefighters said he died going to doing what he loved to do, being a firefighter. He was on his way to work when the accident occurred.
Captain Terrell served in various roles with multiple fire departments. He was Captain and Medical Training Officer at Pleasant Run Fire Department, as well as a Firefighter/EMT with Monroe Fire District, Lawrence County Fire Territory, and Ellettsville Fire Department.

A post from the Lawrence County Fire Territory noted that Terrell, who had been with the department since its inception, had recently completed his EMT-B certification, received his Instructor I certification, and had just spent his weekend training at the Winter Fire School, eager to share his new knowledge with his colleagues.
Social media posts from various fire departments described Terrell as a dedicated and passionate firefighter. The Monroe Fire Protection District recognized him as “a dedicated member with multiple agencies in both Monroe and Lawrence County.” The Pleasant Run Fire Department honored him as “not just a firefighter, but a brother, a mentor, and a friend…Captain Leroy Terrell was a dedicated public servant whose impact stretched across many departments and countless lives.”
