Gabhart, relays shine in sectional prelims

JASPER – Bedford North Lawrence claimed three top seeds during the IHSAA boys sectional preliminary races at Jasper on Thursday.

The Stars sparkled in two relays, and Garrett Gabhart posted the top time in the 100-yard backstroke. The winners in each event during Saturday’s finals will advance to the IHSAA state championships.

Gabhart clocked 55.43 while dominating the backstroke. He teamed with Porter Brown, Carson Puckett and Oliver Brown to post 1:35.20 to earn the top seed for the 200 freestyle relay, and he combined with Dustin Haltom, Puckett and Oliver Brown to record the fastest time in the 400 free relay in 3:32.04.

“The guys had a monster night,” BNL coach Adam Young said. “Everyone had big time drops across the board. We have almost everyone back for Saturday, and we moved up significantly from our seeding coming in.

“We should be able to go even faster for finals, as many did not shave for tonight.”

Gabhart was seeded second in the 100 butterfly in 53.75.

The state finals are set for Feb. 28 in Indianapolis.
