BEDFORD – After one season at the helm of the program, Greg Burton has resigned as the head coach at Bedford North Lawrence.

Burton, the 12th coach in the 51-year history of the program, guided the Stars through a tumultuous 7-16 season, the first losing campaign since 2006 and the most losses in BNL’s tradition-rich annals. He’s the third man to coach only one year before departing.

“It’s been a roller-coaster of a season,” Burton said. “On the court play is one thing, but the off-court negativity was a lot.

“Personally, I went through a lot, lost my mom and grandpa within a month and half of each other, so that was a big part of it. With all that, maybe I wasn’t there mentally all season, although I thought I was. With the season being over, it was something where the positives don’t outweigh the negatives at this point.”

BNL’s key wins during the season included three Hoosier Hills Conference victories and a win over Orleans on Senior Day. The Stars lost to Floyd Central in the sectional final at Seymour, ending their 13-year run with a sectional championship.

“I loved coaching the girls,” Burton said. “I had a blast, even though we didn’t have success. We got better as a team as we went along, we had a lot of fun moments. There were a lot of great personalities. There was a lot to look back on that was fun. I just enjoyed coaching these girls, and the parents that were supportive were fantastic.”

Burton previously coached at Eastern Greene and Eminence, where he won two sectional titles.

BNL’s overall program record is now 907-272.
