BLOOMINGTON– The City of Bloomington has released the Crash Hub, a new interactive online resource to improve traffic safety awareness and support data-driven decision-making for safer streets.
The Crash Hub provides access to comprehensive crash data and includes the newly developed Crash Dashboard and Safe Streets for All Priority Corridors and Intersections maps. These tools empower residents and city planners with insights into crash patterns, helping to identify high-risk areas and guide future safety improvements.
“The data, spanning 2019 to 2023, includes vehicle, pedestrian, and bike crashes across Monroe County, providing a comprehensive view of traffic incidents in our region,” said Meghan Blair, GIS Manager. “The dashboard and maps could not have been possible without the dedication of Charlie Moore and Max Stier, ITS GIS Specialists, and data cleaning efforts from Katie Gandhi, MPO Transportation Planner. The launch of this hub aligns with the City of Bloomington’s broader Safe Streets for All Initiative, aiming to reduce accidents and enhance mobility through infrastructure improvements and community engagement.”
The Crash Hub is a collaborative effort between the Planning & Transportation, Engineering, and Information & Technology Services (ITS) Departments. It provides access to State of Indiana crash data and highlights priority areas for safety improvements.
David Hittle, Planning & Transportation Department Director added, “With the adoption of the Safe Streets For All plan, the City has committed to making safety the key determinant in deciding how to direct resources to transportation improvements. The Crash Dashboard now makes the data that drives those decisions publicly accessible.”
Future developments from the Safe Streets for All Action Plan include securing additional funding, advancing planning efforts, and implementing targeted safety measures to enhance Bloomington’s transportation network. The next phase for the Crash Hub will include:
- Incorporating 2024 crash data in the fourth quarter of 2025
- Developing new bicycle- and pedestrian-oriented maps to better visualize mobility patterns and risks
The City of Bloomington encourages residents, transportation planners, and safety advocates to explore the Crash Hub and use it as a resource to support a safer, more connected community.
