The incident began at approximately 4:26 p.m. when Bedford police were dispatched to the 1000 block of 13th Street after a stolen package report. The complainant reported that she had observed a male walking past the residence, stopping at the porch, and taking a package from the porch. The caller, who was upstairs then, captured a video and photo of the suspect. When she yelled at him, the man fled, walking south on N Street.

The male suspect was described as wearing a multicolored jersey-style T-shirt with the number “10” on the back and green shorts. Upon reviewing the footage, Captain Dakoda Emmons noticed what appeared to be the torn remnants of an Amazon package nearby. The package, which was addressed to the resident, was found in the vicinity where the suspect had been seen.

While canvassing the area, Captain Emmons observed a male, matching the description of the thief, walking on 16th Street. The suspect, later identified as Atchison, was apprehended by police after crossing between two homes.

Upon making contact, officers detected a strong odor of alcohol and noticed that Atchison’s eyes were red and bloodshot. Atchison was administered a preliminary breath test, which showed a positive result for alcohol.

Further investigation revealed that the stolen package contained various dietary supplements with a total value of $122.37. The package’s owner confirmed his intent to pursue theft charges in a phone interview. Major Swanson, who assisted in the investigation, recovered several stolen items. However, some items were not located.

Atchison, who has a previous theft conviction from 2019, was arrested and taken to the Lawrence County Jail after being processed at the Bedford Police Department. He is on probation following his prior conviction and was out on bond for other pending criminal charges.

The recovered stolen items were returned to the rightful owner.

Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
