Pleasant Run VFD seeks funding for vital safety equipment

LAWRENCE CO.– Volunteer fire departments are the backbone of community safety, protecting 87% of communities nationwide. These dedicated volunteers, representing 65% of the country’s firefighting force, are often our neighbors, stepping up as the first line of defense during emergencies.

The importance of well-maintained and up-to-date equipment cannot be overstated, mainly concerning personal protective equipment (PPE) like the self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). These devices are crucial for firefighter safety, providing breathable air in hazardous environments.

On Tuesday morning, Deputy Chief Bryant, also President of the Pleasant Run Volunteer Fire Department board, addressed the Lawrence County Commissioners and requested $6,000 from the county’s opioid funds. This funding will help purchase 15 new SCBA apparatuses and 30 air bottles, critical equipment for the department’s volunteers.

“Our old equipment was unsafe and outdated,” said Deputy Chief Bryant. “This $6,000 will cover the cost for now, but more will need to be raised to pay for the equipment.” The new equipment costs approximately $50,000, placing a significant financial burden on the volunteer department.

Commissioner President Rodney Fish said they would accept the fire department’s application for funds and take it under advisement along with the other requests.

The Pleasant Run Fire Department is launching its first-ever licensed gun raffle to bridge the funding gap. The raffle’s grand prize is a Rock Island VR70 12GA Semi-Auto Shotgun.

Tickets for the raffle will go on sale March 16 and will be available until March 29. Only 400 tickets will be sold at $10 each.

This fundraising effort is crucial for the department to acquire the necessary gear and ensure the safety of its volunteers and the community they serve.
