MITCHELL – A Mitchell man was arrested on multiple charges after a domestic dispute on Old Vincennes Road on February 8, 2025.

According to an affidavit for probable cause filed on February 8, 2025, by Lawrence County Police Department Sergeant Whitney Daugherty-Anderson, Stephen Alvey, 35, has been charged with:
- Domestic Battery in the Presence of a Child
- Domestic Battery with Serious Bodily Injury
- Domestic Battery with Prior Conviction
- Interference with Reporting of a Crime
On February 8, 2025, at approximately 11:05 p.m., Lawrence County Dispatch received a call from a father who reported that his daughter was involved in a physical altercation with her boyfriend, Stephen Alvey. Dispatch had previously received a 911 open line call from 535 Old Vincennes Road at approximately 10:20 p.m. Dispatch attempted to make contact but received no answer.
Sergeant Anderson and Officers C. Pruett and K. Long responded to the residence.
Upon arrival, officers met with the woman, who stated that Alvey had pushed her down. Officers observed an injury to her left wrist, which was swollen, and she was unable to move it.
The woman told officers she and Alvey had verbally argued throughout the day. Alvey had been in the bedroom drinking whiskey and was sending her text and video messages while she was cooking dinner for the children. She stated that Alvey came out of the bedroom, and she called 911, placing the phone on speaker. She said she laid the phone on a nearby table, and Alvey hung up the phone. It was at this time that he pushed her down, causing her to fall backward and injure her wrist when she tried to brace herself. Alvey then left the residence.
The woman went to a neighbor’s house to tell them what happened and show them her injury, but they did not offer assistance. She stated that the neighbors are Alvey’s friends. She then returned to her residence and called her parents.
She told police that three children were present in the residence at the time of the altercation. Her oldest child was visiting his girlfriend at the neighbor’s house.
The woman signed a battery affidavit and indicated she wanted to press charges against Alvey. A battery affidavit and domestic battery lethality screen were completed. Sergeant Anderson was wearing a department-issued body camera during the response. The Department of Child Services was contacted to report the incident.
Sergeant Anderson attempted to obtain the woman’s medical records from IU Health Bedford Hospital on February 9, 2025.
The information was forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office, a warrant was issued for Avery’s arrest, and he was detained on Monday, March 10.
Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
