MITCHELL– Craig Hout, 49, of Mitchell, was arrested on Tuesday, March 11, on a drug charge after police found cocaine.

According to an affidavit for probable cause filed by Lawrence County Police Department Officer Christian James, Craig Hout has been charged with Possession of Cocaine or a Narcotic Drug.
On March 11, Sergeant Compton and Officer James went to the 4000 block of Port Williams Road to locate Craig Hout, who was wanted on an active arrest warrant. Upon arrival, Hout’s father stated that they could enter the house and that Craig was likely in his room. Hout’s father directed the officers to Craig’s bedroom.
Officers found Craig Hout asleep in his bed. After knocking and announcing themselves, Sergeant Compton opened the door and woke Hout. Hout was advised of his warrant and began to get dressed. During conversations, Hout mentioned that the only thing he could think of was that “his drug screen came back dirty.” During a conversation with his girlfriend on speakerphone, she asked, “Are the cops going to search the house?”
After his conversation with Hout, Officer James asked him if there were any narcotics in the house. Hout stated that there was cocaine in the top left drawer of the desk near his bedroom door.
The narcotics were taken as evidence, and Hout was detained and transported to the Lawrence County Jail without incident on charges of possession of a narcotic drug and the warrant for a probation violation.
Sergeant Compton tested the white powdery substance, and it tested positive for cocaine. There was not enough of the substance left to obtain an accurate weight.
Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
