Indiana House Committee unanimously passes bill expanding lifeline law immunity

INDIANA – The Indiana House Courts and Criminal Code Committee has unanimously passed Senate Bill 74 (SB 74) to expand lifeline law immunity. Senator Ron Alting authored the bill, sponsored by Representatives Wendy McNamara and Carey Hamilton.

SB 74 seeks to provide immunity from prosecution for certain crimes to individuals who:

  • Are reasonably believed to be suffering from a health condition directly resulting from alcohol consumption.
  • Are assisted by someone who requested emergency medical assistance on their behalf.

Senator Alting introduced the bill to the committee, outlining its intent to encourage individuals to seek help in alcohol-related emergencies without fear of legal repercussions.

The bill garnered strong support from various organizations, including the Indiana University Police Department, Purdue Student Government, Mental Health America of Indiana, and the Collegiate Action Network. These groups testified in favor of the bill, emphasizing its potential to save lives and promote responsible behavior.

Following the testimony, the committee voted 13-0 in favor of SB 74, demonstrating bipartisan support for the legislation.
