INDIANA – The Indiana House Courts and Criminal Code Committee has unanimously passed Senate Bill 120, which mandates DNA sample collection from individuals arrested for felonies. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Wendy McNamara and authored by Senator Michael Crider, now moves forward in the legislative process.

SB 120 requires county sheriffs to collect a DNA sample from any person taken into custody for a felony offense. Refusal to provide a sample would be classified as a Class C misdemeanor.
During the committee hearing, the bill was amended by consent to ensure consistent language throughout the legislation. Representatives from the Indiana Sheriffs’ Association and the Indiana State Police testified in strong support of the measure, citing its potential to enhance law enforcement investigations and public safety.
