Mitchell woman arrested on OWI charges after making several traffic violations

BEDFORD– A Mitchell woman was arrested early Thursday morning on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and OWI endangerment after making several traffic violations.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Captain Harrison Fleetwood of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, the driver, Amanda D. Zukas, 47, was stopped at 1:15 a.m. after Captain Fleetwood observed a black Buick Enclave failed to use a turn signal while turning onto 16th Street from Clinic Drive. He then witnessed the vehicle fail to stop behind the stop line at State Road 37 and 16th Street intersection.

After initiating a traffic stop, Captain Fleetwood noted that Zukas’s eyes were red and glassy, and he detected the odor of alcohol on her breath. Zukas admitted to consuming a few drinks at a bar after work.

Zukas agreed to perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. During the tests, Captain Fleetwood observed several indicators of impairment.

A portable breath test administered at the scene indicated the presence of alcohol. Zukas was then transported to the Lawrence County Jail, where she provided a breath sample on an EC/IR-II instrument, resulting in a blood alcohol content of 0.096%.

Zukas was booked into the Lawrence County Jail on charges of OWI and OWI endangerment.

Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
