WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order Thursday directing the U.S. Education Department to develop a plan for its shutdown, a White House official confirmed. This move fulfills a campaign promise to eliminate the agency, which is frequently a target of conservative criticism.
Trump has long characterized the department as wasteful and ideologically biased. However, the order faces significant hurdles, as dismantling the department would ultimately require an act of Congress established in 1979.
A White House fact sheet states the order will instruct Secretary Linda McMahon to “take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return education authority to the States while continuing to ensure the effective and uninterrupted delivery of services, programs, and benefits on which Americans rely.”
Critics, mainly advocates for public schools, argue that eliminating the department would exacerbate inequalities within the American education system, leaving vulnerable children behind. Sources and related content
