Jackson County Public Library cultivates community with Seed Library

JACKSON CO.– The Jackson County Public Library nurtures green thumbs and community spirit with its popular Seed Library program. Launched in 2021, the program offers a diverse collection of heirloom seeds, freely available to anyone looking to grow their gardens at home.

No library card or district residency is required to participate in this unique initiative. The Seed Library’s initial collection was made possible through funds from the library’s endowment with the Community Foundation of Jackson County. This year, the library has expanded its offerings with heirloom flower, fruit, herb, and vegetable seeds purchased with nonprint materials funds and generously donated by seed companies.

Patrons can find a variety of seeds, including basil, beans, bell peppers, broccoli, cucumbers, cauliflower, chives, cilantro, eggplants, peppermint, lettuce, lavender, sunflowers, pumpkins, rosemary, squash, watermelon, tomatoes, zinnias, zucchini, poppies, spinach, and many more.

Seed packets are conveniently housed in repurposed card catalogs at the Seymour and Crothersville libraries and available at the Medora Library desk. For those unable to visit the library, seeds can be requested through the Outreach Services staff.

Due to limited supplies, there’s a daily limit of five seed packets per household, and availability is not guaranteed. Currently, the library cannot accept seed donations or saved seeds due to state seed laws and regulations.

Anyone interested in participating or seeking more information about the Seed Library can visit Information Services upstairs at the Seymour Library or the Crothersville or Medora libraries.
