ADA Community Fair to celebrate 35th anniversary, promote unity

BEDFORD—The Lawrence County Commissioners approved the request for a unique community fair on Tuesday morning to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The fair will be held on Saturday, July 19th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Lawrence County Courthouse square.

Rita Kersh addresses the commissioners.

Local advocate Rita Kersh requested the event, which will coincide with the weekly Farmers Market, creating a vibrant atmosphere of community engagement. Organizations serving individuals with disabilities will participate, offering valuable resources and information.

Rita Kersh, who is legally blind and deaf, spearheaded the initiative, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness and fostering unity. “I have had this idea for some time,” Kersh stated. “This is an event that people can learn from those with disabilities and unite our community.”

The ADA Community Fair aims to provide a platform for education and understanding, showcasing the diverse resources available to individuals with disabilities. Attendees can expect a range of informational booths and interactive displays, all free of charge.

“We want to create an inclusive space where everyone feels welcome,” Kersh added. “It’s about breaking down barriers and celebrating the contributions of people with disabilities.”

The South Central Association of Visually Impaired and the Southern Indiana Center for Independent Living proudly sponsor the event, demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting the disability community.

Residents are encouraged to attend the ADA Community Fair to learn more about disability resources and celebrate the landmark legislation that has transformed the lives of millions.
