BEDFORD – Lawrence County Clerk Amy Voorhies addressed the Commissioners Tuesday morning, requesting approval to change the credit card processing company used by the Sheriff’s Department and the Clerk’s Office. The current provider, Allpay, has been criticized for its inefficient customer service and high transaction fees.

Voorhies explained to the commissioners that Allpay charges a substantial 9 percent fee to individuals using credit cards for payments. She proposed switching to Pay.gov, a platform used for payments to U.S. government agencies, which utilizes the Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service’s Card Acquiring Service (CAS) through Fifth Third Bank and Worldpay.
“They will cost the county nothing to use and will only charge the cardholder a 3 percent fee,” Voorhies stated. “We would like to start this service as soon as possible.”
Voorhies ‘ recommendation was based on Pay.gov’s significantly lower transaction fees and established reputation as a reliable platform for government payments. She emphasized the importance of providing county residents with a more cost-effective and user-friendly payment option.
The switch to Pay.gov is expected to result in substantial savings for individuals making payments to the Sheriff’s Department and the Clerk’s Office. The commissioners acknowledged the benefits of the proposed change and indicated they would take the request under advisement.
