Explore spring blooms during Henderson Park Wildflower Hike

MITCHELL– Nature enthusiasts are invited to join the White River Forestry Committee for a captivating Wildflower Hike at Henderson Park (also known as Twin Creek Valley Nature Preserve) on Saturday, April 12th.

Carroll Ritter organized the hike, which promises to showcase one of the most impressive wildflower areas the group has ever featured.

“This Park or Nature Preserve is managed by The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and it may be one of the best wildflower areas the group has ever featured,” Ritter stated.

Mike Everidge, TNC’s Naturalist, will lead the hike, along with Ritter and other natural resource professionals who will assist with flower identification.

“If the group gets spread out, there will be others on hand to answer questions,” Ritter added, ensuring an informative experience for all participants.

Two hikes will be offered on April 12th: one from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and another from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Due to the popularity of these hikes and the limited number of participants each session can accommodate, pre-registration is required. A $10 fee will be collected during registration to secure a spot. Children 16 and under can attend for free.

To register, call 812-279-8117, extension 3, and contact Amanda or Stephanie at the Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District Office. Be sure to specify your preferred hike time when registering.

Light refreshments will be provided, and a port-a-john will be available on-site. Any funds raised beyond the event’s expenses will support the White River RC&D’s educational initiatives. Participants are welcome to bring their lunch and enjoy a picnic at the park.

Hike leaders are knowledgeable about spring ephemeral wildflowers, trees, vines, invasive species, and other plants, offering attendees a wealth of information. Everidge will also share insights into the property’s history and land management practices.

The event will proceed in light rain but will be canceled in severe weather. The terrain features rolling hills with gentle trails, and participants are advised to wear sturdy shoes.

Given the high demand for these hikes in previous years, early registration is strongly recommended to secure a place.
