Avoca man arrested after throwing purse at woman

AVOCA – An Avoca man was detained on domestic battery and drug charges after Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at his home.

Police detained Timothy Ryan, 63, of Avoca, on Saturday, March 29, on charges of domestic battery, intimidation, possession of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.

According to an affidavit for probable cause filed by Officer Augustus Hogan of the Lawrence County Police Department, officers responded to a call in the 100 block of Ryan Lane at approximately 10:00 p.m. Dispatch reported a female standing outside her residence, claiming that Ryan was throwing items at her.

Upon arrival, the officers encountered Ryan at the front door and the woman in the garage. Ryan admitted to arguing with the woman after consuming alcohol but denied any physical altercation. However, officers detected a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the residence.

The woman informed officers that Ryan had thrown her purse at her, striking her in the chest. She also stated she had a video recording of Ryan threatening to harm her or anyone who came to the residence. The woman signed a battery affidavit and was given information for the Hoosier Hills Pact Office.

During the investigation, the woman retrieved marijuana in clear plastic bags and a bong from inside the residence, stating Ryan regularly smokes marijuana. The marijuana field-tested positive, and the bong contained burnt residue.

Ryan was arrested and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.

Those arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
