Fire chief survives after fire truck rollover

SWITZ CITY– A Greene County fire chief is counting his blessings after a harrowing accident involving a fire truck on Saturday. Chief Bryan Woodall of the Switz City Fire Department reported a single-vehicle crash on a county road, resulting in the fire truck rolling over.

According to Chief Woodall, he was driving the Fairplay Grant Fire Territory truck when he inadvertently moved too far to the edge of the road. The truck then entered a ditch and struck a culvert, bouncing and skidding sideways before rolling onto its passenger side.

“Through modern day safety, seatbelts and God’s great hand, I was saved from any extreme injury,” Woodall stated in a social media post.

The fire truck involved was a relatively new addition to the fleet, having been in service for only two months. Woodall emphasized the incident as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers of operating large vehicles on county roads, many of which lack adequate shoulders.

“Remember that most county roads do not have shoulders and if they are blacktopped. There is a definite drop off,” he cautioned.

Fortunately, Chief Woodall sustained only minor injuries in the rollover. The incident serves as a significant safety reminder for drivers of all vehicles, but significantly larger emergency vehicles, when navigating the often narrow and shoulderless county roads.
