October 17, 1943 – March 31, 2025
Truman Dennis Cummings, known by all as Denny, passed away on March 31, 2025, at the age of 81.
Born on October 17, 1943, he was the son of Joe and Hazel (Speer) Cummings. He spent his entire life on the family farm, which shaped his character, work ethic, and deep love for the land.
Denny was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Reida (Sanders) Cummings. Together, they shared 59 years of love, faith, and unwavering commitment to family. Their marriage was a testament to the strength of their bond, built on faith, hard work, and shared joys.
Denny was the proud father of three children: David (Yvonne) Cummings, Michael (Laura) Cummings, and Janel (Costa) Shepin. His greatest joy was being a grandfather to Jesseka, Jordan, Landon (Marissa), Jacob Cummings, Natalia, and Nikolai Shepin.
He adored his grandchildren and took every opportunity to share stories, wisdom, and laughter with them.
Preceding Denny in death are his parents, Joe and Hazel (Speer) Cummings, and his brother, Hubert Cummings.
A graduate of Heltonville High School, Denny dedicated many years of his life working at General Motors as a machine repairman. He also worked at Cummins and Heltonville Limestone earlier in life and served in the Army National Guard. Despite his professional commitments, his heart remained on the family farm, where he spent his entire life tending to the land, instilling a love of nature in his children, and embracing the rewards of hard work. Later in life, he found fulfillment in driving a school bus for the Lawrence County School District, where he enjoyed the daily interactions with students and the simple pleasure of greeting each child with a warm smile.
Denny was a man of deep faith. He served his church community, first at Mundell Christian Church and later at Hillcrest Christian Church. His faith guided him in all aspects of his life, and he was always ready to lend a hand to those in need. Whether through church service, helping a neighbor, or offering quiet support to a friend, he lived out his Christian values daily.
Denny was a man of great wisdom known for his steadfast nature, unwavering dedication to family, and willingness to step up whenever needed. He found peace in the simple pleasures of riding his tractor, watching the seasons change on his farm, and sharing meals with his loved ones.
His presence was a cornerstone in the lives of many, and his legacy of generosity, hard work, and faith will continue through the lives of those he loved. Though he will be deeply missed, the lessons he imparted and the love he shared will never be forgotten.
