GM truck and SUV owners face lengthy delays due to transmission part backorder

INDIANA – GM truck and SUV owners are experiencing significant service delays due to a nationwide backorder on transmission valve bodies, a critical component linked to a potential rear-wheel lock-up issue.

The problem stems from a possible miscommunication between the transmission and its control module. It can affect all internal combustion engine (ICE) -powered full-size GM trucks and SUV models from the 2019 model year and later. Affected models include the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe; GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL; and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV. Both eight-speed and 10-speed automatic transmissions are potentially impacted.

General Motors initiated Special Coverage N242454441 on November 26, 2024, to address the issue. This coverage covers repairs for 15 years or 150,000 miles and is related to GM Safety Recall N242454440.

However, the repairs are significantly delayed due to a national backorder of the necessary transmission control valve bodies. GM has not provided an estimated timeframe for part availability, leaving customers facing extended wait times. Reports indicate delays ranging from six weeks to over seven months, with some owners being told it could take up to a year.

In some cases, dealerships have opted for full transmission replacements as a solution, with one owner reporting GM approval for a replacement after a seven-month wait. This workaround, however, is not consistently offered, leaving many customers in a state of uncertainty.
