IHCDA launches crowdfunding campaign for Cooper Commons Recreation Project in Spencer

SPENCER – Spencer residents will soon have more space for recreation if this crowdfunding campaign reaches its goal of raising $50,000 by June 1, 2025. If successful, the project led by the Town of Spencer will receive a matching grant as part of the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority’s (IHCDA) CreatINg Places program.

Needed amenities to Cooper Commons include a new restroom facility, a full-court basketball court, and two pickleball courts.

“We are thrilled at the prospect of enhancing Cooper Commons with features all Owen County residents can utilize and enjoy,” said Matt Rayburn, Chief Real Estate Development Officer at IHCDA. “These proposed changes will increase health, wellness, and social connection for everyone in the community.

Funds from this campaign will add amenities to Cooper Commons, including a new restroom facility, a full-court basketball court, and two pickleball courts.

“This project is going to have a huge impact on the usability of Cooper Commons,” said Kristen Portteus, Parks Board President, Town of Spencer. “This is the first step in making it an enjoyable park for people of all ages. I can’t wait to enjoy the new courts with my family and friends!”

Since the CreatINg Places program began in 2016, projects have raised more than $12.8 million in crowdgranting funds and an additional $10.7 million in matching IHCDA funds. The program is available to projects located in Indiana communities. Non-profit entities (with 501c3 or 501c4 status) and local government units can apply. Eligible projects must have a minimum total development cost of $10,000, where the recipient will receive $5,000 in IHCDA matching funds should it successfully raise $5,000 through Patronicity. IHCDA will provide matching grant funds up to $50,000 per project.
