Severe storms, flash flooding, and high winds threaten region

LAWRENCE CO. – Residents across the region are bracing for severe weather, as forecasters predict a volatile mix of thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected to persist into the mid-afternoon, but the real threat begins in the late afternoon and continues into tonight. Numerous thunderstorms and heavy rain are predicted to develop, with the potential for severe weather.

“All severe hazards are possible,” warned The National Weather Service, “including damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes.”

The heavy rainfall also raises concerns about flash flooding, posing a significant risk to low-lying areas and roadways.

Lightning is a threat from any storm, so seeking shelter indoors is crucial during periods of thunder.

In addition to the thunderstorm threat, windy conditions are expected, with gusts reaching 45 to 50 mph possible into this evening. Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and exercise caution while driving.

The severe weather threat is expected to continue into the coming days.

“Additional thunderstorms are possible Thursday into Saturday,” forecasters stated. “Some severe storms cannot be ruled out through Friday, especially south of Interstate 70. Present indications are that damaging winds would be the primary severe threat.”

The ongoing heavy rainfall is also expected to exacerbate flooding concerns.

“More rounds of heavy rain Thursday through Saturday night will lead to additional flooding or prolonging existing flooding,” weather officials warned. “Significant river flooding is expected to develop late this week and into the weekend.”

Residents are urged to stay informed about the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions.
