INDIANAPOLIS—Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales supports President Trump’s recent Executive Order protecting the integrity of American elections and ensuring that only U.S. citizens are allowed to vote.

“One of our biggest accomplishments since taking office has been our efforts to finally ask for proof of citizenship when individuals try to register to vote. During my time in office, I’ve heard numerous concerns about non-citizens being registered to vote—either through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) or during various voter registration drives. We are determined to ensure this does not happen in Indiana, and non-citizens will not end up on our voter rolls,” said Diego Morales, Indiana Secretary of State.
Now if an individual attempts to register to vote with an ID that suggests they may be a non-citizen, the county clerk will send a notice requesting proof of citizenship before their registration is accepted. This additional step ensures only U.S. citizens are eligible to vote in Indiana’s elections, reaffirming the state’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its electoral system.
Secretary Morales believes these measures are common sense. Secretary Morales believes proof of citizenship should be a nationwide standard and looks forward to communicating to the Indiana congressional delegation concerning the SAVE Act.
Secretary Morales has voiced strong support for the recent Executive Order signed by President Trump, which aligns with Indiana’s ongoing efforts to safeguard election integrity. The Executive Order directs the Department of Homeland Security to provide the necessary access to DHS databases for the purpose of verifying the citizenship status of individuals. Secretary Morales was at the forefront of this issue by sending a list of registrations to USCIS prior to the November General Election, and more recently joining his colleges in a letter to Secretary Kristi Noem requesting access to these same databases. It also tasks the Election Assistance Commission with updating the federal voter registration form to require documented proof of citizenship.
