GREENE CO. – A late-night traffic stop on Interstate 69 in Greene County escalated into a vehicle pursuit that ended with the arrest of an Indianapolis man in Monroe County early Friday morning.
According to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, the incident began on April 4th, 2025, at approximately 12:15 a.m. Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy Sergeant Jordan Allor was conducting traffic monitoring on I-69 at the 102-mile marker northbound when he observed two vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed.
Sgt. Allor initiated a traffic stop on both vehicles as they approached the East State Road 445 exit on I-69. Both vehicles initially pulled over to the shoulder. However, while the lead vehicle, a 2010 bronze Nissan Murano, briefly stopped, the trailing vehicle, a 2002 red Chevrolet Camaro, completely stopped. The Nissan then sped off northbound on the shoulder of the roadway, fleeing the traffic stop.
The Nissan continued northbound on I-69 into Monroe County. At the 111-mile marker, the vehicle left the roadway, and the driver fled on foot into a nearby wooded area. Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies initiated a search of the area. After approximately 45 minutes, Tyler J. Smith of Indianapolis was located on Lodge Road by a Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy and taken into custody.
While the search for the Nissan driver was underway, Martinsville Police Officers located the red Camaro and its driver in Morgan County.
Tyler J. Smith was transported to the Greene County Jail and booked on charges of Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle, a Level 6 Felony, and Reckless Driving, a Class C Misdemeanor. Authorities stated that charges for Reckless Driving will be forwarded to the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office for the driver of the Chevrolet Camaro.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Department was assisted in this incident by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, Bloomington Police Department, Martinsville Police Department, Monroe County Fire, IU Health Ambulance Service, and Ken’s Westside Towing.
The investigating officer for this incident was Sgt. Jordan Allor of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.
Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
