Columbus Police investigate break-in and vandalism at The LEX

COLUMBUS—Columbus police are investigating a break-in and vandalism last week at The LEX, a dynamic space near the Bartholomew County Public Library.

The LEX is described on the Bartholomew County Public Library’s website as a “dynamic space designed to ignite curiosity, foster growth, and bring people together.” It serves as a hub for various library programs and community engagement initiatives.

Officers with the Columbus Police Department were called to the LEX around 7:23 a.m. on Friday, April 11th, to respond to reports of possible vandalism. According to police, preliminary information suggests that at least one suspect gained entry into the building and proceeded to vandalize portions of the interior using fire extinguishers.

Authorities reported that some items were stolen during the incident in addition to the vandalism. Columbus Police detectives found no signs of forced entry outside the building, suggesting the suspect may have gained access through other means.

Library officials acknowledged the incident and stated that efforts to address the damage are underway.

“We are saddened to share that in the early morning hours of Friday, April 11, the LEX was broken into and vandalized,” the Bartholomew County Public Library said in a statement. “The damage incurred can be cleaned up and repaired, but this will take time. An investigation into this crime is underway, and we want to thank the Columbus Police Department for their prompt response.”
