
BARTHOLOMEW CO. – Bartholomew County authorities are investigating a Friday night crash involving intoxicated teenagers in a stolen vehicle, which resulted in one person being transported to an Indianapolis hospital.
According to the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were dispatched to reports of a vehicle driving recklessly on Interstate 65 just after 11:30 p.m. Friday, April 11. The reports indicated the car was swerving on the highway and brake-checking other motorists.

Deputies quickly located the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. However, the driver allegedly fled at speeds exceeding 110 mph, according to police. The driver then tried to exit the interstate at the Walesboro exit but lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle reportedly went airborne before rolling over, trapping one of the occupants inside.
Upon reaching the scene, deputies discovered that all three individuals inside the vehicle were juveniles and appeared to be intoxicated. Further investigation revealed that the car had been reported stolen out of Indianapolis.
All three juveniles were treated by medics at the scene. One of the teens was subsequently transported by ambulance to IU Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis for further medical attention.
Deputies stated that the 16-year-old driver was taken to the Bartholomew County Youth Services Center and is facing preliminary charges of possession of marijuana, possession of stolen property, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, OWI endangerment, and illegal consumption.
Authorities indicated that criminal charges for the other two juveniles will be considered following their medical treatment.
The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department stated that the accident remains under investigation.
