INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana State Police detectives are investigating a multi-county police pursuit that ended in a violent crash at the intersection of Mitthoefer Road and Washington Street in Indianapolis on April 14th.
The incident began at approximately 9:15 p.m. when the Henry County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a maroon Dodge Durango on SR 3 near Indiana Avenue in New Castle. The driver of the Durango fled, initiating a chase that proceeded westbound on I-70, traversing through Hancock County and into Marion County.
The pursuit continued as the Durango exited I-70 at Post Road northbound, eventually heading south towards the intersection of Washington Street and Mitthoefer Road. While traveling southbound on Mitthoeffer Road, the Durango entered the intersection at a high rate of speed and collided with a blue Ford Mustang and then a white BMW.
The impact caused the Durango to flip multiple times, ultimately coming to rest upside down south of the intersection. An adult male was ejected from the Durango and was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other occupants of the Durango were transported to area hospitals for treatment.
The driver of the Ford Mustang was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the BMW sustained minor injuries and was treated and released.
Authorities reported that several firearms were found at the scene, believed to have been ejected from the Durango during the crash.
The circumstances surrounding the pursuit and the subsequent crash remain under active investigation. Multiple police agencies were involved, and investigators are working to determine all factors related to the incident.
As of now, no arrests have been made, as two of the individuals from the Durango remain hospitalized. The intersection of Washington and Mitthoeffer was closed for over four hours while the investigation and cleanup took place.
State Police indicate that further information will be released as it becomes available.
