BLOOMINGTON – Bedford North Lawrence recorded five victories on the mat while conquering Bloomington North 48-18 during high school wrestling action on Thursday night.
James Covey remained unbeaten at 220 pounds and Connor Dugan made his successful varsity debut at 138 to highlight BNL’s first dual match of the season.
”This was a great night of wrestling for us,” BNL coach Chris Branam said. “We really had a lot of energy tonight. The boys knew that I used to coach at Bloomington North, and going back even farther this was my crosstown rival when I was at Bloomington South.”
Dugan defeated North’s Jeremiah Casillas 11-5, Reese Hamblen pinned Cael Hickok in 3:04 at 145, and Bruce Engleking was awarded a win at 152 when his opponent used an illegal move. Engleking suffered a wrist injury because of the slam.
“Connor made his varsity debut tonight and had a decided victory to start the team going,” Branam said. “Reese kept the momentum going with a second-period pin.”
Other winners for the Stars included Byron Kyger (pinning James Kidwell in 1:48 at 160), Covey (trapping Cesar Cielo in 1:57 at 220) and Jorj Filler (9-3 over Kayne Roberts at 120).
”Byron looked like a leader tonight, going out and getting the first-period pin just before time ran out,” Branam said. “Covey continues his unbeaten run and continues to grow in his strength on the mat.
“We saw Jorj fight a battle. It was a great match for both wrestlers. Neither kid wanted to lose, but Jorj came out on top through sheer toughness.”
BNL will visit Seymour on Dec. 17.
