Veteran Owls fly past Stars

BNL’s Graham Turner forced a second-set tiebreaker before falling in No.1 singles action at Seymour on Thursday.

SEYMOUR – Seymour’s senior experience paid dividends as the Owls conquered Bedford North Lawrence 5-0 during boys high school tennis action on Thursday.

The Owls rolled to easy first-set wins on all the courts, then had to fight off challenges in three matches to complete the sweep.

“This was actually a very good night of tennis for us,” BNL coach Chris Kurtz said. “Seymour is a really good, experienced team (with five seniors), one of the best in our conference this year. Although the start was rather slow, I could see the energy and confidence rising. The way our guys played the second sets, it was by far the best tennis of this season.”

Eli Meyer had to survive a second-set tiebreaker to top Graham Turner 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) at No.1 singles. Hunter Heckman topped Gavin Baker 6-0, 6-2 at No.2, and Reuben Kruse swept past Isaac Bridges 6-1, 6-0 at No.3.

In doubles, Jack VonDielingen and Joe Schmidt fought off Jayden Kemp and Drew Stephenson 6-0, 7-5 at No.1, while Parker Thompson and Trevor Alberring clipped Nate Pemberton and Carter Kimmel 6-2, 6-4 at No.2.

“Graham has really been a rock for us,” Kurtz said. “He hasn’t won them all, but gives everything out there. He has learned to control his thoughts and emotions, and grown so much as a player since this time last year. I just can’t say enough about what a great young man, teammate, and leader he is.”

BNL (3-7) will visit Brownstown on Sept. 8.
