NASHVILLE – Bedford North Lawrence finished 18th in the boys AA race during the Eagle Classic at Brown County on Saturday morning.
The Stars totaled 454 points. Indian Creek won the team title with 94. In the AA girls race, the Stars were 17th with 424 points, with Seymour taking the top spot with 113.
Jonah Bailey was the pacesetter for BNL in the boys race, crossing 33rd overall in 17:45.2. Alex Nicholson was 62nd in a personal-best 18:31.2. Other scorers for the Stars included Chase Turner (20:13.9), Kason Gulley (20:15.1) and Max Klein (21:57.2).
“Alex and Jonah are continuing to stay consistent in both practice and races,” BNL coach Nick Boyd said. “We will keep working to increase speed as we move into the second half of our season. Overall we saw some good finishing times from team members, with Chase and Kason pushing each other to some nice finishes.”
In the boys elite race, Carmel won with 63 points while Carmel’s Kole Mathison was the individual winner in a blistering 14:52.1.
In the girls race, Mary Batz was the BNL leader, finishing 57th in 23:23.5, just clipping teammate Jabrie Sullivan (23:23.8) at the line. Other scorers for the Stars included Ella Peek (25:53.2), Madison Chandler (26:11.7) and Emma Baumgart (26:21.3).
“Overall, it wasn’t the race we were hoping for,” BNL coach Jill Vance said. “Given the size of this meet, we weren’t going into it worrying about team placing regardless – but we were short two runners today and that definitely affected our team score.
“Individually, we saw a pair of good races from Jabrie (who was just five seconds off her career PR) and Emma (who ran her second fastest 5k ever). But there’s always experience to be gained from every race.”
Columbus North won the girls elite race with 75 points, and Julia Kiesler paced the Bull Dogs to that crown by winning the individual race in 17:28.7.
BNL will compete at Jennings County on Sept. 17.
