GALENA – Floyd Central dominated both sides of the pool while sweeping past Bedford North Lawrence during high school swimming action on Saturday.
The powerful Highlanders rolled to a 127-53 win in the boys meet, and capped the sweep with a 134-33 victory in the girls meet.
The Stars managed only one win in each meet.
“Both teams got their clocks cleaned,” BNL coach Adam Young said. “Floyd Central outperformed us in every phase of the contest. To be fair, we have had a mountain of illness over the last week, way more than even our covid season in 2020. The girls team was down four, which is a third of the team. On the boys end, Cole Baker was sidelined by flu. No doubt this impacted our state of mind heading into this meet.
“But we have got to learn how to overcome adversity and put great swims out, even when we face those inevitable challenges that come with competition. Challenges aside, we simply did not execute. Both teams know we expect to see the things we work on daily in our races. The good news is we will get another shot at Floyd Central come HHC time and we have a long season still to go.”
Emma Gabhart recorded the lone win for the girls, taking the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.29. BNL’s Jaevyn Nikirk won the boys diving competition with 138.5 points.
“There were bright spots,” Young said. “We saw some nice time drops by Cameron Irwin, Talon Hooten, Lawson Grissom and Vincent Knight. Isaiah Conner has really been improving quickly and it showed today with a great drop in his 100 free. Carson Puckett has been improving nicely here at the beginning of the season and has been steadily moving up the depth chart.”
BNL will host Bloomington North on Thursday.
