Confused man found in a garage wrapped in a sleeping bag and is arrested

BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested Wednesday when Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to 56 Old Guthrie Road after a report of an unknown male beating on a woman’s door.

When deputies arrived they spoke to a scared female who said an unknown male kept beating on her door demanding to be let in.

Officers searched the area but were unable to locate anyone.

A neighbor then reported they had a video of the male walking around the caller’s and their property.

An officer stayed in the area. Then another neighbor flagged down an officer and said there was an unknown male inside his garage.

Matthew Chastain

The officer found 38-year-old Matthew Chastain in what appeared to be an exercise room. Chastain was sitting in a chair wrapped in a child’s sleeping bag in front of an electric heater.

Chastain told the deputy he was told to meet someone at the home.

He told police he was homeless and “had no idea how he ended up where he was”.

Police say Chastain “did not appear intoxicated but did act confused”.

The owner of the home told police he wanted “the man arrested that he had no right to be in his garage and on his property.

Chastain was arrested on a charge of criminal trespass and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.
