Mitchell man arrested after injuring another man with a kitchen knife

MITCHELL – A Mitchell man was arrested on Tuesday on charges of battery resulting in bodily injury and battery with a deadly weapon.

Robert Canfield

Police arrested 57-year-old Robert Canfield after Mitchell Police Department officers responded to a report of a domestic battery at 220 West Main Street.

The caller reported Canfield had been “physical with him”.

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department also responded.

When officers arrived, they were met by a female who was outside of the home. She told police Canfield was inside the home.

The male victim who was also outside was holding his left hand wrapped in a bloody paper towel. The male had suffered a gash on two of his fingers. The male told police Canfield had cut him with a knife.

Police then detained Canfield.

Canfield admitted to cutting the male but said it was not intentional. He told police he had been drinking. Police noticed a fifth of Gloria Margarita and an empty bottle of Svedka on the floor. The trash can was full of empty alcohol containers.

The woman told police that when she arrived home she heard Canfield yelling and screaming at the male victim. She opened the door to find Canfield with a kitchen knife in his hand and still screaming. She managed to get the knife from Canfield.

The male victim told police Canfield had attacked him with the knife and when he put his hand up to block the attack he was cut blocking the blow.

Police seized the knife for evidence. Canfield was then transported to the Lawrence County Jail.
