A man was arrested after stealing trailers from a woman’s property while she was incarcerated

BEDFORD – A Fredericksburg man is facing a theft charge after a woman reported to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department to report her property was stolen while she was in jail.

The woman reported the theft occurred sometime between August 21, 2022, and August 23, 2022.

Brian Hammons

The woman told police she had given her F-150 truck keys to 20-year-old Brian Hammons so that he could weld a piece of metal on her truck. When she returned home she found out that Hammon had not welded the piece of metal onto her truck and that two homemade flatbed trailers were missing from her property at 4328 Stonington Road.

The woman suspected Hammons had taken the trailers so she called him and requested her truck keys and the missing trailers.

Hammons told the woman he was going to fix the truck and he admitted to taking the trailers for safekeeping while she was incarcerated.

She advised him to return the trailers and Hammons agreed that he would. The value of the trailers is estimated at more than $750.

After several weeks of talking with Hammons and asking him to return her trailers and the keys, she reported the theft.

The woman told police she believed the trailers were parked in the 7000 block of North County Road 475 East in Orleans. But police didn’t find Hammons or the trailers at that location.

Police made attempts to contact Hammons several times, but he did not answer and/or denied their calls.

The information was forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
