Lawrence County will pay testing fees for former landfill that has been closed 20-plus years

BEDFORD – The Lawrence County Commissioners signed a contract with AECOM Technical Services Inc. to assist the county with groundwater and methane monitoring at the former Lawrence County Landfill.

The landfill was closed in the early 1990s, but still IDEM is requiring testing. The former landfill is located adjacent to the Lawrence County Government Complex on County Complex Road.

“IDEM’s consultants and advisors need to follow their own statutes and regulations,” said County Attorney David Smith. “We have not failed any testing in over 20 plus years. This is a waste of taxpayer dollars. We have spent more than an estimated $250,000 on testing that according to IDEM’s statutes and regulations does not need to be done. I would recommend contacting Rep. Chris May and Senator Eric Koch about this.”

AECOM will conduct two groundwater tests and two methane monitoring tests and statistical analysis at a cost not to exceed $30,200.
