Belligerent teen busts out car windshield while mom is driving to police department and is later summoned to court

BEDFORD – A Bedford teen was arrested after her mother went to the Bedford Police Department to speak to an officer about a 17-year-old female causing a disturbance.

The mom reported the teen was “out of control”. While en route to the police department, the teen busted out the car’s windshield and took off running north from the police department. The teen returned a short time later.

An officer spoke to the teen and the mom in the front lobby of the Police Department. The teen was yelling and screaming that she wanted to go home. The adult was asked to step outside to de-escalate the situation.

The teen told the officer she was afraid of the police due to previous encounters with them. She also told the officer she suffered from mental health issues. The officers requested an ambulance respond to the department.

The mom stated to the officer she and the teen argued over dinner and the teen was out of control. She was able to get the teen in the car so she could bring her to the police department to get help. Once in the car,  the teen busted the windshield and then took off on foot.

The mom told police she didn’t know if she should file charges, but she needed help.

While speaking with the adult the teen continued to scream and flip off and on the outside lights at the police department.

The officer stepped back into the lobby and told the teen to take a seat and stop yelling and messing with the light switch.

She continued to yell. The teen then attempted to exit the building and was again told to take a seat. The officer then stood in front of the door to prevent the teen from opening it. She continued to yell and kick at the door causing the glass to break.

Other officers were called to the scene and had to forcibly restrain the teen while she continued to resist. She pulled away and kicked at the officers and chairs, and had to be taken to the ground where both her hands and legs were restrained.

IU LifeLine ambulance crew administered a sedative to calm her and transported her to the hospital for further treatment.

Juvenile probation was alerted and the teen was issued a summons to appear in court on May 17th at 9 a.m. on charges of resisting arrest and criminal mischief.
