Bedford man is arrested following an attack on his mother

BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested after Bedford Police officers responded to a report of a domestic fight at 1620 1st Street at 8:07 a.m. on Friday, May 30th

When officers arrived they spoke to two females who were on the front porch. One of the women was holding her jaw and she was bleeding from her gumline.

Nathan Way

The woman told police her son 33-year-old Nathan Way, was standing outside in front of the home smoking a cigarette. She stated, Way had been in an altercation with his ex-girlfriend last week and was no longer allowed to be at the 1620 1st Street address. The woman said she confronted her son and asked why he was there and that is when he became hostile. The woman went back inside and locked the door.

The woman said Way used the code for the front door and entered the home. He then pushed the woman, his mother, causing her to fall. While on the ground she told police Way struck her in the head and face area.

He then left the home on foot.

Police say the woman had bleeding inside of her mouth and complained of jaw pain. She also complained of head pain and redness on her right bicep.

Nathan then left the residence on foot.

An IU LifeLine ambulance responded and the woman was evaluated by EMTs. The woman elected to be driven to the hospital by a female friend.

The woman signed a domestic battery affidavit.

Police searched for Way but were unable to find him. On May 31, police received a call saying Way was at 1709 N Street and wanted to turn himself in. Officers went to the home and he was arrested on a charge of domestic battery with moderate bodily injury without incident and transported to jail.

Way told police his mother had violently woken him up that morning and was upset with Way because he had not done the dishes and other household errands. He claims he stepped out of the home to smoke and that is when his mother slammed the front door catching his foot. He told police he used his shoulder and body weight to push the door open. He said his mother “got in his face” and he doesn’t allow “anyone” to get in his face. He admitted he had kicked the woman in the stomach to get her to back off.

While his mother was on the floor he slapped her in the back of the head and kicked her in the face. He told police he believed his mother then lost consciousness. That is when Way’s girlfriend stepped in and forced him to cool off.

He told police he went outside and stood there. He then fled. He said he went to 1709 N Street but no one was home so he went to his old apartment on Ted Jones Drive. He then returned to the home on N Street and decided to turn himself in.
