Two were seriously injured in a crash on Sunday afternoon on I-65

JASPER CO. – On Sunday, June 4th at approximately 4:45 p.m., troopers were dispatched to an injury-involved crash on I-65 southbound at the 212 mile-marker.

This is approximately three miles south of the Rensselaer exit.  Trooper Haddon responded to the scene and located two vehicles with severe damage.  A 2019 Honda Pilot had overturned and was in the west ditch.  A 2017 Honda Civic was disabled in the right lane.

Trooper Haddon’s investigation showed that the Honda Civic had been traveling southbound at a high rate of speed when it rear-ended the Honda Pilot, forcing the Pilot into the ditch where it overturned.  All occupants of the Pilot were transported for treatment.  Two of those that were treated were injured so severely that they required a medical flight to a trauma hospital in Illinois.

The driver of the Civic, Alexander Lukowski, 31, from Valparaiso, IN, showed visible signs of impairment, and an OWI investigation was initiated by Trooper Haddon. Due to the nature of the crash, a blood warrant was requested through the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office.

That warrant was signed by a Jasper County Judge and later completed at a local hospital.  After being medically cleared, Mr. Lukowski was transported to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department where he was booked into the jail on the following charges of two counts of OWI causing serious bodily injury, a Level 5 felony, OWI endangerment a person, a Class A misdemeanor and OWI, a Class C misdemeanor.

The Indiana State Police were assisted by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, D1 Towing, Rensselaer Volunteer Fire Department, Jasper County EMS, UCANN, and Samaritan Park View Air Ambulance.
