BEDFORD – The Bedford Plan Commission will be conducting a public hearing on the deteriorating condition and condemned units of Southview Terrace Apartments located at 29th Street and Ted Jones Drive in Bedford.
The public hearing will be held Friday, July, 28th at 9:00 a.m. at the City Concourse located at 1402 H Street in Bedford.
Several apartments have been condemned by the City of Bedford. The apartment complex is owned by Jeffery Jones.
According to Plan Director and Zoning Director Brandon Woodward, “No one has been evicted or removed from their apartments, but there are several issues that need to be addressed. But many of the apartments are unhabitable and not safe to live in.”
“Many have no floors or walls or they are rotten and someone could fall through,” he added. “The roofs have leaked and drained to the units below and there is mold. This has been going on for years and it is to the point we can not let it continue.”
Woodward said they will present photos and documentation to Hearing Officer Brad Bough for his review during the meeting.
“We have to do something to force his (Jeffery Jones) hand to get these issues taken care of,” added Woodward. “These residents are spending $800 to $900 a month for rent and can not continue to live in these conditions.”
The only apartments that have been commended at this time are currently vacant and unlivable.
“We are hoping to work with Mr. Jones to address the issues in the apartments that are lived in first and then resolve the issues in the vacant apartments without having to go to court or evict residents from their homes,” added Woodward.
