Bedford Fire Department Chief John Hughes is retiring

BEDFORD – Bedford Fire Chief John Hughes is retiring.

Chief Hughes has served the department for more than 32 years.

“32 years is a long time and other opportunities have come available for me and my family,” said Chief Hughes. “Firefighting has been my lifetime career and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.”

Chief’s last day will be August 11.

John Hughes was sworn in as Fire Department Chief by Mayor Sam Craig on Feb. 7, 2020

Hughes has served as chief for more than 3 years.

“It’s a responsibility that I did not take lightly; it’s a huge responsibility. I had some big shoes to fill. The department has had some fantastic chiefs over the years. It takes a team with all of us working together. I want to thank Mayor Craig for giving me the opportunity.”

Former Mayor John Williams swore Hughes in when he became a firefighter. He was present when he became chief.

“My career has been phenomenal,” added Chief Hughes. “I take real pride in serving as the Fire Prevention Coordinator for more than 22 years.”

Hughes was in every local school teaching children, teachers, and parents about fire safety.

“Every time someone stopped in for a tour of the station I always took the time to speak to them about fire safety,” he added.

Former Bedford Fire Department Chief DeWayne Turpen presented then Battalion Chief John Hughes with a Certificate of Excellence for his contributions to Bedford’s Fire Prevention Program. 

Hughes will miss serving the citizens of Bedford. “I have met some lifelong friends during this journey as a firefighter,” he added. “I will miss them.”
