BEDFORD – In addition to her goalie gloves, Bedford North Lawrence’s Maya Fahr needed a flak jacket for protection. She was under constant attack.
Floyd Central’s offensive surge was relentless as the Highlanders stormed past the Stars 9-0 on a steamy Tuesday evening. The temperature warning should have included something about the heat Floyd was able to generate while winning the Hoosier Hills Conference opener.
Freshman striker Cooper Stiefvater recorded a hat trick, and Cassie Oliver deserved a special notation for three assists, as the Highlanders improved to 4-1 overall.
“I don’t think the girls played a bad game by any means,” BNL coach Bret Roberts said. “I think we played a very talented team. They had very fast players that were able to dribble down the sidelines and cross the ball in front of the goal. This play was very successful for them as they had several players that were able to score off the crosses.”
Amelia Kaml added two goals, Taylor Moore totaled a goal and an assist, Kyleigh Carbeno had one goal, Makayla Koch tallied a goal and an assist, Audrey Brieschke had a goal, Greenley Burke had two assists and Mia Gianfagna had one assist for FC. Fahr made several impressive saves, but BNL had trouble getting possession past midfield.
“Without Maya, the score would have been higher,” Roberts said. “We stayed positive the second half and didn’t give up, which I am proud of them. It is hard to keep playing when you are down that many goals. Floyd is always a very tough game.”
The Stars (1-2) will host New Albany on Saturday.
