ST. JOSEPH CO. – The Indiana State Police has been requested to investigate the death of an inmate at the St. Joseph County Jail.
The Indiana State Police were contacted Sunday evening at approximately 5:41 p.m. on September 3, 2023, after jail staff were alerted to a female inmate 52-year-old Erica S. Williams, of South Bend, suffering from what is suspected to be a medical emergency.
Life-saving efforts were taken by jail staff until emergency medical technicians arrived. Despite life-saving measures by jail staff and EMTs, the inmate was pronounced deceased at the jail.
Foul play is not suspected.
An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI.
