INDIANA – Yesterday evening, at approximately 6:38 p.m., first responders were dispatched to a serious multi-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of I-465 north of 86th Street. Dispatchers recieved information about entrapment and serious injuries. The Indianapolis Fire Department responded quickly and began extrication efforts.
Three adults were transported to an area hospital by IEMS. An adult female was pronounced deceased at the hospital, and another adult female suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized. The third person, an adult male, suffered minor injuries.
The crash closed all northbound lanes of I-465 at 86th Street for more than four hours while the crash was investigated and the wreckage was removed.
Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionists responded to the scene along with ISP Detectives to assist with the investigation.
Preliminary investigation revealed traffic in the area was backed up for unknown reasons, the driver of an SUV failed to stop and struck the back of a stopped passenger car. The deceased woman and the two injured people were inside that vehicle. The impact caused a chain reaction, collecting three additional vehicles. Four vehicles suffered significant damage and required tow trucks.
The circumstances into this crash are still under investigation, at this point neither alcohol nor drugs is suspected to be a factor. Notification to the family of the deceased has been made. There is no further information to release at this time.
