BLOOMINGTON – In September Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas Carter announced the promotion of Trooper Ben Smith to the position of Corporal.
Corporal Smith will remain at the Bloomington District and serve as a District Duty Officer. He earned this promotion through a competitive selection process.
Corporal Smith is a third-generation Trooper and is a 3 ½-year veteran of the Indiana State Police. His grandfather, William Smith, retired as a detective in the Indianapolis Post, and his father, Todd Smith, retired as a major from the Indiana State Police’s Legal Office. Corporal Smith’s uncle, Brian Smith, retired as a detective from the Bloomington District; and his cousin Riley Nungester currently serves as a detective for the Bloomington District.
Corporal Smith joined the United States Air Force in 2012 and served as an aircraft mechanic for six years. He currently serves as a Technical Sergeant with the Indiana Air National Guard and has been with IANG since 2019. He joined the Indiana State Police in 2019 and graduated from the 79th Recruit Academy. He earned his bachelor’s in criminal justice degree from Indiana Institute of Technology and was accepted into the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law where he is currently working toward a law degree.
