$15,000 transferred to cover police vehicle repair costs

LAWRENCE CO. – Sheriff Greg Day came before the County Council this Tuesday evening to request the transfer of $15,000 from gasoline funds to repairs for the repairs on the department’s aging vehicles. Including police cars, transport, and medical vehicles, the department has nearly 40 vehicles. The department is only able to replace 3-4 of these vehicles per year.

An unequipped new vehicle costs roughly $43,000 at the discounted price provided by Hobson. Equipping them with the appropriate tech costs $12,000 -$15,00 with labor and equipment.

Of the $60,000 budgeted, the Lawrence County Police Department has spent $69,000 already this year for repairs.

According to the Sheriff, $38,000 will remain in the gas fund after the transfer, leaving plenty to cover the remainder of the year’s fuel for the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department even if November and December costs turn out to be the highest of the year.

The council approved the transfer unanimously.

Sheriff Day also gave a report on the Jail.

The jail currently houses 109 inmates, including:

  • 25 females
  • 84 males.
  • 8 Department of Corrections
  • 2 parole holds
  • 13 convicted roles
  • 6 felons

10 inmates were transported to the DOC Monday.
