MITCHELL – Mitchell High School is still looking for their first win of the year after falling to Barr-Reeve on Saturday 61-31, bringing their record to 0-6 to start the season.
The Bluejackets got off to a slow start against the Vikings, scoring their first basket of the game midway through the first quarter after an 8-0 start from Barr-Reeve. The Vikings continued to grow their lead in the quarter, holding a 22-11 advantage by the end of the period.
It was the second quarter where their lead ballooned, as Barr-Reeve finished the half with a 22-point advantage, holding Mitchell to just three points during that time.
Saturday’s game was the second in consecutive days for the Bluejackets, following the team’s Friday loss to Brownstown-Central. Playing back-to-back days factored into the team’s performance against the Vikings, according to Mitchell head coach Dakota Brasher, though he said it wasn’t the primary issue for his team on the night, instead citing a lack of intensity.
“You know, playing back-to-back, we’re tired, a little fatigued, but it’s not an excuse to come out and not play hard and we just didn’t come out and play with the effort necessary to win. Ultimately, not being ready to play, it falls on me. And we’ll see, we’ve got to be ready to play on Tuesday. We will play a really good team on Tuesday, and we’ve got to come out ready to compete and play with the effort that it takes to win basketball games,” he said.
“Teams have to do that. You have to be able to be a tough team and play on back-to-back days and we just weren’t mentally tough enough tonight. And ultimately it falls on me,” Brasher later added.
The Bluejackets will get another chance at triumph on Tuesday, when they’ll welcome conference opponent Springs Valley to The Hive. The Blackhawks, the reigning Patoka Lake Athletic Conference Champions, have started their season 4-0 and will be another team added to the list of difficult challengers faced by Mitchell thus far in the season, which includes two of last year’s state champions in Lanesville and Bedford North-Lawrence.
