BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested on Saturday, December 30, after the Bedford Police Department received multiple 911 calls about a motor vehicle accident and one of those involved attempting to flee the scene.
When police arrived at 4:12 p.m., they found a large red pickup truck with front-end damage stopped across both lanes of traffic on 5th Street. There was a gray SUV with heavy front end damage stopped in front of Becky’s Place.
Bystanders claimed the male driver, later identified as 39-year-old Michael Langley, of Bedford, was under the influence.
Officer Michael Bell found Langley unconscious. Both doors were locked and the vehicle was rolling. Officer Bell attempted to break the window with his flashlight but was unsuccessful. Officer Steven Hatton collected a tool from his patrol vehicle and utilized it to break the front passenger’s window. Officer Hatton unlocked the doors and placed the vehicle in park.
Simultaneously, Officer Bell removed Langley, who was turning blue, from the truck, lay him on the pavement, and began administering sternum rubs. Langley regained consciousness and attempted to stand. Police say Langley was suffering from an opioid overdose. He was given a dose of Narcan, but his condition worsened, and he passed out. A second dose of Narcan was administered. Bedford Fire Department first responders took over his treatment, and he regained consciousness.
According to witnesses and the other driver involved, Jerry Wykoff was traveling east on 5th Street while Langley was traveling west on 5th Street. Langely crossed the center line into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with Wykoff’s vehicle
Langely was treated at the scene by an IU LifeLine ambulance and refused further medical treatment.
He was then transported to IU Health Hospital for a blood draw.
Sgt. Faheem Bade and his canine Zazu found a baggie of crystal meth in the floorboard of Langely’s vehicle.
Langley was arrested on charges of possession of meth, operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction, and OWI endangerment.
Both vehicles were towed by Stone City Service and Collision Center.
