Commissioners accept bids for paving and rejuvenation of roadways

BEDFORD – The Lawrence County Commissioners accepted two bids Tuesday morning to improve county roads.

Lawrence County Highway Superintendent Brandi Webb

The funds to pay for the work will be from a Community Crossing grant.

According to Lawrence County Highway Superintendent Brandi Webb, asphalt rejuvenation is restoring chemical properties that have deteriorated since the moment new asphalt was laid down. Unlike conventional water-based asphalt emulsion sealers, asphalt rejuvenators are made from coal tar blended with aromatic oils and solvents.

An asphalt rejuvenator penetrates well below the surface to chemically revitalize and protect the asphalt binder by replacing the tars and oils lost due to oxidation. This process also seals the pavement against air, water, and chemical contaminants, thereby slowing oxidation and deterioration, which extends the effective service life of the pavement.

The commissioners accepted the bid from Rejuvenation Technologies for $285,042.49

E&B Paving bid of 1,011,635.25 was approved to pave county roads.

Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer reported the cold weather let Lawrence County off easy.

“I feared power outages,” she added. “But all went as well. We have a plan in place and the county didn’t get the super high winds and ice. The community pulled together and offered places for people to go if they needed somewhere to warm up.”

Sheriff Greg Day

Sheriff Greg Day provided the inmate count. There were 113 inmates in the Lawrence County Jail this morning; 86 were males, 27 were females, ten Department of Correction holds, one parole hole, and six Level 6 felons.

The department will also sell two vehicles and a rifle, seized under the forfeiture law.
